I figured that this early in the game the 5 point would not be that important

Making the 5pt this early in the game is all that more important because there's so much game left to play and you'll have it for the whooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooole game if you make it now. After an opening 62S and 63S it is clear to make the 5pt. After an opening 64S it is no longer so clear due to the power of the 9pt builder. The plays are essentially tied.
