Since player a is a regular participant, he should know that he can ask for his preferred direction at the start of the match (or roll for it if player B does not agree). Once the direction is set, it should be the same for the rest of the match. If player A finds it troublesome to roll on the side of the bearoff, and then he requests to change direction, he basically is trying to pass the "trouble" to the opponent. Of course player B will say NO! and there is nothing "unsocial" about it.
