In Response To: A little rules question...and socialiability in a local BG club (Stick)

Many years ago I was playing at a local club in Acapulco. The locals were complete beginners. One approached me, and begged to play me one friendly game as he heard I was "the World Champion." I told him someone had padded my resume, but I'd be happy to play him.

First roll, he rolled on the left. I corrected him, and explained that he should be careful, as someday he might play in a large tournament, where rules were strictly enforced, so he should work on good habits now. He thanked me and corrected it.

Next roll he did it again, and I reminded him a bit more firmly that he should roll on the right side. I'll never forget what he said to me: "Would you mind if I keep rolling on the left. I have no right arm, and it is hard for me to roll on the right with my left."

It was a detail I had noticed, but hadn't paid much attention to. Hey, I'm a backgammon player, not a tailor!

There wasn't much conversation for the next few minutes. Then, I tried to break the ice: "What kind of work do you do?"

"Well, until the accident that took my right arm, and almost took my life ..."

Some matches are more awkward than others.
