The full rules for US clock play can be found here: http://chicagopoint.com/bgclockrules.html
Standard time controls are 2/12 = 2 minute reserve time per point of match length, plus 12 free seconds delay time per move that you can use before your reserve time starts counting down. So in a 9 point match, you'd get 18 minutes reserve time. The delay time means that as long as you can roll, make a play, lift your dice and hit the clock within 12 seconds, you can literally play forever without ever using any time - meaning that there is no reason why anyone who is paying attention should ever run out of time.
It is a great idea to get a little practice before playing in a tournament event. If your first experience with a clock is in a big tournament, you will feel rushed and uncomfortable, because you feel like you must make all your plays within 12 seconds. That is why it is important to play few matches without pressure where you just play at your normal pace without worrying about the time and see how much time you have left at the end.
As for clocks, the cheapest and easiest is to get a chess clock app for your phone if you have one that can support it. It must support the Bronstein time control. If you want to invest in a specialized chess clock for backgammon, most tournament players in the US use the Excalibur Game Time II.
