BQ: fear of the gun

Apparently I failed to take into consideration several elements, for example: 1. The slot on the opponent's ace point. 2. My 4-point board is much stronger than his. 3. I am behind in the race. 4. I am unlikely to get gammoned.

The problem is that I just don't know how to sort the wheat from the chaff,

I'm not sure that everything else is almost chaff, but for sure your 3rd observation is pure wheat.

What's your game plan here?

Mine would be: hit at the first opportunity (to equalize race) and then run home safely. Therefore: wait for a shot at least 6 points behind the opponent's last checker (the 22pt is perfect) and continue building a strong home board.
