In Response To: Another strange incident from the Cleveland Tourney (Peggy Neubig)

During our match, he whined about how late it was getting and he had a flight to catch every time I paused to study a complicated position. I told him it was his own fault for refusing to play for 45 minutes and he could always default. He claimed he couldn't understand why I was upset with him just because he didn't know my name - refusing to acknowledge that he had lied to Joe and Fran about playing and beating me!

Others have commented on your other issues, but no one so far on this. With the caveat that "hindsight is 20-20", I suggest in the future calling in a director (even one you are upset with :) when something like this happens during a match. Everyone DESERVES treatment by an opponent which allows concentration. Not all distractions can be prevented, but if an opponent is complaining about slow play (and he might have reason to do so), it is the director who should be made aware of the situation and alleviate the problem. That's one of the things they are 'paid' (however poorly) to do.

I think some backgammon directors over the years have gone too far in the direction of "let the players work it out". Backgammon isn't bridge (where EVERY rule infraction, etc. is by rule to be settled by the TD, AFAIK). But if EITHER player isn't comfortable with what is going on, the director should intervene. That can't be done if s/he is not even aware there is an issue, so it is up to the player(s) to facilitate that.
