...The programming technology has captured enough human knowledge to play very well & show that this actually can be done.

To truly solve backgammon (where I think everyone would agree on that conclusion), all one has to do is write a program that works backward (i.e. building a tree) from the simplest bearoff to the beginning of the game. (Bearoff databases are built this way.)

I suspect this has been known for nearly as long as there have been digital computers (~70 years) and possibly even before that.

So, has backgammon been solved for over half a century?
