"So in effect the cube will always have negative value to you, mathematically?"

In a consulting chouette with at least one strong player in the team the offer of a decube is not likely to profit the box - unless the weaker team members choose to ignore the actions made/advice offered to them. In a non-consulting game, particularly if there is a fixed order to declaring cube decisions, it has more value to the box, as it can provide a fall back for when he's tried to bluff a pass. It could also usefully be employed by a team member, of course.

"Does it create good constructive discussions on cube strategy?"

Well, assuming consulting on the cube is allowed, it will provide the discussion of whether a double should have been offered in the first place. That may be instructive to some players.

I'm confused by the notion that it may "mess peoples evaluations up". It's an option, like a beaver; are options automatically bad things? I seriously doubt that (particularly in heads up play) I'm the only player who ever offered a very speculative cube (in a volatile position say) - who had this accepted - and then successfully offered to take it back!
