Well the first thing I would do is trash the 8, 9, 12 way of figuring out races. It's simple but also pretty weak among racing formula. Then, if you are going to use it, 12% here would be just over 14 pips so the point of last take would 133 which isn't that far off the 136 you currently have. As lenny mentioned, there will be more wastage than normal for your opponent since the 5 point is likely to remain holey.

You should see the excellent article on bkgm.com about racing formulas. Here you will see how week 8, 9, 12 is and hopefully notice how easy the Keith Count is and switch to it. It's more accurate and just as easy to use.

Treating this kind of game as basically a race is the right way to go but when the racing decision is so close the contact has to be worth a little something even if there isn't likely to be much of it. I don't suspect your error here to be but a small one and wouldn't lose any sleep over it.
