I don't know if I've ever seen the 8/9/12 rule be wrong in low-wastage positions. Since the positions used in that article are essentially random (high-wastage) it makes sense that the 8/9/12 rule fares poorly. For example:
White is Player 2
score: 0
pip: 3Money session
Jacoby Beaverpip: 4
score: 0
Blue is Player 1XGID=-D----------------------c-:0:0:1:00:0:0:3:0:10 Blue on roll, cube action?
Analyzed in XG Roller+ Player Winning Chances: 86.11% (G: 0.00% B: 0.00%) Opponent Winning Chances: 13.89% (G: 0.00% B: 0.00%) Cubeless Equities No Double: +0.722 Double: +1.444 Cubeful Equities No Double: +0.722 (-0.278) Double/Take: +1.444 (+0.444) Double/Drop: +1.000 Best Cube action: Double / Drop eXtreme Gammon Version: 1.21
Saying that 8/9/12 recommends ND/T while other systems recommend passing is a little bit unfair.
Regarding the OP,a holding game with a made barpoint by the defender should be evaluated pretty much as a pure race
I think this overstates the case by a substantial margin.
(trying to keep my post count down)
