Just to be clear, this is because White's 7pt and 9pt are filled in so that the chances of hitting a shot on the midpoint are limited? With fewer ways to clear the midpoint, I believe the side holding the 5pt can take with a noticeably greater race deficit than in a straight race, due to the shot equity.
