Bob Beamon, definitely. Athletics, kings of sports at the Olympics, king of sport events, the long jump, one of the major events, world record shattered in a major way.

There are other things that are great, but that would have little appeal to most of the people. For a Dutchman, Eric Heiden's 5 gold at the winter olympics in Lake Placid, and especially the 1.14.99 (!) on the 1500m, with a hand on the ice (!) because he almost fell - I still see that moment, but probably I am the only one here... But in any case, that was special, an American at an event that at that time was dominated by Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish and Russian skaters (and I guess a few Canadians and Japanese on the sprint).
