My father was a hungarian. He was involved in the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. My mother is a german. For me it is the rumble in the jungle. I watched with my father. I was a Muhammed Ali fan, and by the way, denied later to serve in the army. I got sad and sadder, but my father said to me: "watch out, i saw him against Sonny Liston". And that is my number two, the anchor punch.
One of my favorite books is "On Boxing" from Joyce Carol Oates. There she wrote: "To enter the ring near-naked and to risk one's life is to make of one's audience voyeurs of a kind: boxing is so intimate. It is to ease out of sanity's consciousness and into another, difficult to name. It is to risk, and sometimes to realize, the agony of which "agon" (Greek, "contest") is the root."
This two fights from Ali, against Foreman and Liston, are burned into my brain. I never saw again a sportsman like him. I had tears in my eyes, as he sparked off the olympic fire 1996.
