When you're trying to improve I feel that most people should take the approach of mastering the basics before worrying about the rest of the game. With anything you do, whether it be backgammon or bridge, poker or pool, playing the guitar or playing tennis, master the basics and then add on and you will soon be one of the best there is.

With backgammon it's tough to define what one considers the basics. There's no excuse for not having a firm grasp on all types of racing positions that may arise, from your standard long race to short reference bearoff positions to everything inbetween. After this holding games are quite standard yet as you will see in live play still fumbled by some of the best players. We know I'm a big opening whore, and would recommend this as part of the basics. Not only how to play the opening few moves and the concepts involved but also early game blitzes are big time important I think.

This is just a start to the basics of course but when you really understand each part of the game then when you play you'll play with more confidence and be able to concentrate on other parts of the games you have yet to tackle. Prime versus prime, pay now or pay later, and then to all the things that make backgammon more than a simple game that aren't easily categorized.
