For words of wisdom, I often refer to the works of the late great Walter Trice and his excellent legacy: Backgammon Boot Camp.
"There are three ways to win", Race, Prime and Attack.
For the developing player, this is an excellent place to start alongside Paul Lamford's Position, Race and Threats (PRAT). These concepts cut out less important information and cuts down the time factor.
If the process of decision-making is organised and remains disciplined, your less likely to play instinctively. OTOH, instinct is your friend.
Instinct being the initial diagnostic level attempts to complete the picture as to what is going on in the position.
The process of focusing on Race, Prime and Attack could be seen as being the 2nd diagnostic level; adding a further piece to the puzzle.
Proficiency at this level shapes and refines intuition; the 3rd diagnostic level.
The acquisation of knowledge (your life long goal) is the 4th diagnostic level; a feedback loop for the on going process of enhancing all levels of decision-making.
