I don't know for sure how many lengths, but, in a century long ago, in a country far away, I was running bets for a team that bet on horses. My first few weeks there were an extension of a losing streak that began before my arrival. On this particular Saturday afternoon we were down nearly a million dollars (USD) for the day after the first six races. I got back to the hotel room from the OTB after getting down on Race 7, in time to watch the telecast. We loved a horse that was about a 40-1 shot. Coming into the final turn the three lead horses were in a pack, and the next three trailed him in another pack. Our horse was the last of those three, running sixth. Coming around the turn the horses fanned out. And then our horse did something I have only ever seen in cartoons. It took off like there was a rocket up its ass, just blew the fucking doors off every other horse, like a Shelby Cobra walking away from a fleet of Yugos. The camera view switched to a side view of the finish. Our horse went screaming across. Where were the other horses? One-thousand and one, one-thousand and two, one-thousand and ... I didn't actually count it down, but it was around three seconds. I guessed he won by at least twenty-five lengths.
Meanwhile, our next favorite horse had made a nice little run of his own, and finished 2nd, so we went from down a million to up a million on that one race.
Wasn't my money, but it was still pretty exciting.
