I think Fabrice's post is excellent and has a lot of detailed arguments. The key to understanding this position is that it is essentially an issue of when to pay. If you pay now (16/11 8/4) and get away with it, you reach a very safe and solid position. If you get hit, it is an early hit, white is not ready to contain you yet, and you retain a strong front position with many white checkers behind. White would face a lot of work. If you delay, hits will come when White's front position is stronger, and spares may have gone. Blue's strong forward position will be more likely to collapse.
So you want to leave the shots when they don't hurt much, instead of when they hurt.
