Other considerations

Your ideas are good for major events with lots of time, and for which the goal is to find the best player. I'm not sure we have one of those anywhere in the world right now. The World Cup was the closest to that in recent(?) memory for an event with world attendance -- best 3 of 5 matches to 9-points each -- but that event was discontinued after 1998.
There are a couple reasons not to have long matches:
1) Most weekend events (US for sure, and I'm guessing Europe as well) have a limited amount of time for competition with a decent sized field (~30 up to over 100 players in a field).
2) There is some incentive to also attract players who are less than the top rank in skill level.
Even the MCWC (as it has historically been conducted) has kept at least #2 in mind.
