@Mary and @Bill:

What you do not seem to realize is that all of the efforts are very likely to be entirely volunteer work.

I do realize that.

In both cases, the clubs are run by volunteers who already work hard directing tournaments, getting the word out to players via emails, and entering results on the charts that exist in some form on the websites. In one case, said director has also had to pursue new venues frequently--in one case because the former one had been demolished!

I know that. Because I also do all the things you mentioned.

If something is volunteer work and if somebody is working voluntarily that isn't excuse for doing things poorly. No, it isn't.

Maybe there is some player in club that will also do it voluntarily, but better than current person. Maybe there is somebody's kid who wants to practice making websites (yes, there are kids like that).
Maybe even current person can do much better work if he tries doing websites with Wordpress or Blogger or some other really simple and effective tool for regular people (not-computer-geeks).

The reality is that a simple website provides the necessary info to get new players to come

The reality is that most younger people first look at the package (design) and then only if they find package interesting look inside it (information). So all information doesn't mean anything if people close website before reading first word. (Did you see that green monster at http://www.bellinghambackgammon.com/events.html ?)

Information without design doesn't work. No, it doesn't.
