This is one of the worst criticisms I've ever read.

Just as backgammon websites are one of the ugliest websites I've ever seen ;)

To be honest, I'm surprised by the answers "it is how it's done, and it's just fine".

Creating and maintaining good looking, easy to navigate, full of information, fast loading local club website is probably even easier to do than some DIY I-can't-do-better-than-this horror, if you're willing to use current techonlogy.
As I said twice already, there are web services that could help you (plural). Both with design (many free templates to choose from), navigation and entering new information every once in a while.

Please, invest one hour (maybe even less) into creating nice websites for your clubs. It's not that hard.
