why do Americans emphasize so much somebody's volunteer work?

I think this is a perceptive observation. Though I don't think Americans are the only ones guilty of this, I believe it is true that in America, volunteers have a sense of self-righteousness. Since they are not getting paid, they feel that nobody has a right to expect anything from them, and they get annoyed if their altruism is not appreciated. Whereas in many other parts of the world, where life is tougher and you're forced to do a lot of things without pay just to get by, this attitude is less common.
