A case in point is comparing articles on the same topic in Google News. Although not strictly speaking "sufficiently important and not well known ideas", it is not uncommon at all to to come across examples of downright plagiarism where the same rhetoric and/or turns of phrases are used in only slightly modified form without crediting the original source. At least that is my impression, I have no statistical evidence of how prevalent this is though, the subject is yet to be rigorously studied. But I guess that can be partly accounted for by "the freedom of the press"... (The same might apply to blogosphere?)
