Kit's method

In the past when I've compared the two methods they tended to give the same result. BUT, I only compared when Kit (in the GammonU match between the readers and himself -- or is it 'he' or 'him'?) showed his method in action. I only recall him doing that in these late match effectively dead, or soon to be dead cubes. I've applied the efficiency method (inspired by both Kit's How to Play Tournament Backgammon and Rick Janowski's work -- http://www.msoworld.com/mindzine/news/classic/bg/cubeformulae.pdf) many times at every non-trivial matchscore in a 7-point match and many situations in longer matches (e.g. the 11-point match between readers and Kit). It works MOST of the time -- this is only the 3rd exception I remember, but all have been very late in matches. (One was actually a very low efficiency and the third one a high efficiency in the low 0.8's.)
It's quite possible that a hybrid method -- cube efficiency for most non-trivial matchscore cube decisions and Kit's for late effectively dead and near dead) cube decisions.
John O'Hagan is (or at least has been :) a proponent of the efficiency method. I hope he can add some insight to what we've seen here.
