Alternative to byes

I think the following format would be fun for a two-day tournament:
First day is Round Robin Day.
- 7 rounds of round-robin play (4 rounds before dinner, 3 rounds after)
- Pairings are random; pairings for all rounds are posted at the start of the day, so when you're ready to start the next round you just find your opponent and go
Second day is Playoff Day.
(As an example, suppose there are 42 people in the tournament.)
- Main playoff consists of the players with the best results from the previous day. (In our example, the top 16 players make it into the Main playoff.)
- In the first round, the 1st ranked player from the previous day's RR plays 16th ranked player; 2nd plays 15th, etc. That way every match in the RR is important because it gives you a chance to play a (presumably) weaker opponent in the playoff.
- Everyone else (26 players) plays in the Consolation playoff. (In our example, the top 6 players get a bye into the second round of the consolation. The other 20 must play an extra round to compete for the 10 remaining spots.)
[Yes, there are byes for 6 players. But these byes have been earned, by doing better in the RR than those who didn't get byes. Also, players with byes would know by the previous evening that they don't have to arrive early the next day.]
