"(no downside)"

There definitely is some downside to that "free" play.

i) Suppose A goes for it and the opponent moves checkers closer and A does not hit. B could be much better off after getting closed out. ii) Suppose A goes for it and does hit a second checker. Well A hasn't closed him out yet and B probably has the ace point slotted. If he gets the acepoint anchor he is better off with two checkers back but anchored than he would be with one back on the bar. iii)Suppose B just dances for awhile. The closeout later is not a sure thing if A rolls awkwardly.

Do you know where A's other 3 checkers are? That could be an important factor also. In general I think players go for the 2nd checker in that situation too much.
