I am pretty sure that situation a is a double and close pass having seen rollouts of 1 on the bar and 1 on ace before. The position of the spares may be important though. Black could try to play 2 to 1 giving a chance to get hit in which case being far back is important. That gives chances to get gammoned though so not sure.

The other two are obvisouly much better for opponent and the volatility is low so they will not be cubes.
