Which is why legal moves should become standard. The rule that says the opponent gets to decide whether an illegal play should stand or not, is actually giving the option of not enforcing the rules. Much better then to require that legal backgammon is played, always.
On the same note, I think legal plays HAS to stand, once the turn is ended. The recent story about Arda who allowed his (her?) opponent to take back an extremely stupid move made by oversight shows great sportsmanship. But a player is not allowed to change his/her mind after the turn is ended, so I don't think the players should be able to do this. If you want to show good sportsmanship, you can simply decide not to take advantage of the very stupid play (if possible), on the next turn.
