Your football player analogy is backwards, this is not about allowing the other player to err profitably (it was okay that he was offsides) but about not taking advantage of undue errors that are not really part of the game. A better football analogy would be, could you imagine a football player properly credited with a goal asking the ref to cancel it, because in fact he didn't score? So, rules are rules and must be followed - and everyone basically agrees, but that doesn't mean that we should allow them to be abused. In Falafel's example it is totally clear what play was intended, and I think it is uncalled for not to allow the intended play to be made.
