This distinction between legal-but-boneheaded vs. illegal/impossible is important, as quite a few posters have noted already. If you allow an opponent to correct an illegal or impossible play, such as bearing off to the bar, hitting and putting his own checker on the bar, etc. you are not damaging the integrity of the game--it could even be argued that you are helping preserve it. But if we allow the correction of legal but bad moves after the dice have been picked up, or worse have this become more or less expected ladylike or gentlemanly behavior, we will open up a can of worms we will wish we had kept firmly closed.
What happens when a colluding kib whistles the play dead after his partner makes a poor but legal play? Let's make it a bit grayer than ripping two checkers and leaving a needless blot: let's instead use the example of running a back man with a 63 and failing to pick up the opponent's blot on the bar point on the way. The player then smacks his forehead and says, "Of course I meant to hit it." Did he really mean to, or did he not even see it? What's a nice person to do?
"Di-REC-tor! I want to bar this kib!" would be a great start, of course.
