In Response To: tournament rules and ethics--Sorry, I completely disagree with Falafel on this one (falafel)

I agree it is a terrible rule, but there are several others I think are terrible, and there are several other people that think other rules are terrible that I think are good. Are we going to leave it up to each individual to decide which rules are terrible and which should be respected? If you don't penalize a player for leaving a blot by accident, does that make me a bad guy because I do? If I decide it's not "nice" to call someone for capriciously handling the cube, now, are you a bad guy because you expect that rule to be enforced?

When you allow each player to decide how much and when and where to respect the rules, and when you allow tournament directors to decide that a specific, written rule is not nice so you won't enforce it, you have created an atmosphere where EVERYTHING is a gray area and everyone is constantly living with uncertainty about what infractions they need to steadfastly impose on themselves and others.

If you are right, and this is such a horrible rule, why is it a rule? Simply because not everyone agrees with you (I do agree with you by the way, and obviously so does Chiva). I don't question your judgment or your intentions, but I do question your right, as a player, to decide what rules will apply to your matches and what rules will not. The answer is to work to get the rule changed, not to violate it.
