In Response To: tournament rules and ethics (rew)

I just want to point out the rules from WBA and Nordic Open - I know that many people reviewed them (they will be changed in the Danish federation in the next revision). Paragraph 1.1 is the fair play rule and it states that the tournament director can use his judgment to find a fair solution if the situation is not covered by the rules or are in the gray area. Note that this does not mean that he can just go against the rules if they are clear! I think this is a general misunderstanding - some thinks that the tournament director can do whatever he wants using the fair play paragraph. This is NOT the case - he can only use that paragraph if the situation is not covered by the rules.

From the rules: 1.1 Interpretation These tournament rules cannot and are not meant to cover every possible situation that might arise in the course of a game. They are not a substitute for the tournament director’s judgment and right to find a fair solution, suitable for the specific circumstances.

Illegal moves. We made a new rule about illegal moves - stating that they MUST be corrected if realized before the next roll. Both players must tell they see an illegal play - however there is no penalty if the opponent do not see the illegal move. So in practice it is only officials and the player who have a chance to correct an illegal play (and maybe players who practices fair play in all situations).

From the rules: ILLEGAL MOVES. 1. If an illegal move is noticed before the opponent has rolled his dice it must be corrected. Only the players and tournament officials are allowed to point out an illegal move.

I really like this rule and I have already used it a few times. Maybe it needs an addition about putting yourself on the bar or bearing off opponent’s checker.
