Interesting discussion.

If you are into games of the like (precision/strategy games) ranging from golf to backgammon (games like snooker, curling, etc.) ...

I think of these games as being on a continuum ranging from, say, archery on one end (all precision, virtually no strategy) to backgammon on the other end (no precision, only strategy). [At least there is not supposed to be any "precision" in backgammon--everybody's supposed to be equally good at rolling the dice.]

Given the success of neural nets in backgammon, I was wondering if they might help with the strategy aspect of some of these other games that combine a random element (or lack of precision) and strategy. I started looking at this for curling.

I think it is possible to program a neural net to learn curling strategy. The input is basically the position of the rocks in play, the number of rocks yet to be played, and the score of the game. There are not a lot of books about curling, so most of the strategy is passed down by word-of-mouth. It would be great to have a computer program into which you could enter a curling position and ask, "What shot should you call here?"
