I posed this question in another thread, but you did not respond; why not let any full-time college student, regardless of age, play and discount the director's cut? If your tournament is 85% return, give them a 15% discount and put the other 85% in the prize fund. It cost you nothing, or very little in terms of time, and gives a nice incentive to attract new players.

This seems like a logical first step in reducing expenses for college players. Are you asking the backgammon community to subsidize these players, while you benefit from the subsidy?
