I reckon very few fledgling beginners or people considering taking up backgammon on a more serious level even know about this site.
This site is for backgammon nerds.
I agree with you somewhat on your first statement, although a new player, Ben F., evidently a college student, did state here recently that some of the animus on this site nearly turned him off from the game.
I agree with your second statement completely. :-)
In fact, as a local club director, I do not even mention this site to new players, as I sometimes worry that they might get the impression that you have to run 100 millions rollouts on an opening 43, or memorize match equity tables and double points and take points and gammon values, and just in general spend every waking moment consumed with backgammon in order to succeed at this game.
Hey, I'm not arguing against this- more knowledge is better than less knowledge, but there is something called the law of diminishing returns, and given a bit of luck and a spot of good weather, one can have fun and some measure of success at this **GAME** without having to spend every waking second working on it.
Or, that's what I hear, anyway. I think I might give it a try sometime.
