My question, then, is why would it be "unproductive" to give BGO-ers the opportunity to come up with a winning idea, regardless of the fact that Patrick is undoubtedly working hard on his end to do the same? The Patrick I know is very secure in his knowledge and abilities as a top-notch TD, and is a wide open in terms of considering other peoples' ideas, no matter how strange they might first seem. With all due respect, Rich, I don't think it can hurt to allow a "blue sky" session to take place in a forum that consists of people with all sorts and levels of backgammon experiences... it's not like we'd be slowing him down, or hindering him in any way (and vice versa).

I have had the great pleasure over the years of talking to Patrick about how to run a backgammon tournament. I often throw out random suggestions, not because I think my great idea is worth implementing, but because I'm trying to throw many things against the wall to see what sticks. Out of 100 suggestions I've made to Patrick, he might have seriously considered no more than 5, and implemented maybe a couple. Maybe. Patrick has consulted me on Swiss systems, and I did some work that helped him make some decisions.

At some clubs I have been a part of, people would make "suggestions" in the vein of, "Hey, my idea is better than what we have going on here. You should use it." That's the wrong way to go about doing things. When you throw out a suggestion to a seasoned tournament director, you do so knowing that he can evaluate it just fine. So when I make a suggestion to Patrick, it is often prefaced with, "This may sound crazy, but..." Most of the time, it is, but I *know* that.

So, I like the "blue sky" stuff. Frankly, most of the suggestions on running tournaments that pop up on BGO are not good, but once in a while, there are some real gems. Throw enough darts, you'll eventually hit one dead center.
