If US backgammon were a stock on an exchange I have a feeling it would be a strong "buy and hold". We've all heard the whiners and naysayers about how the game can't thrive because of this or that reason. A lot of people are working hard to prove them wrong.

Rory will be the first to admit (and he did, at the auction) that he stands on "the shoulders of giants" (no pun intended -- and a quote he didn't use but one I copy from -- supposedly -- Isaac Newton). I've never attended a tournament in the last 20 years that I've said "I won't go back..." because they all have been well run, with the right intention.

But I agree with Bob and others that Rory has stepped out-of-the-box (to use another cliche) this year, running the Giants Invitational, and it has paid off with (now quoting Rory) a "77% increase in attendance over last year." I'm going to be very surprised if this event doesn't see another healthy increase in attendance next year.

I thought the best kudo to Rory came from his mentor (and previous director of this event) Howard Markowitz during the calcutta when he paid an eloquent compliment to Rory for all the hard work he has done in a short time to kick this event up a notch or two in the ABT scale. No higher praise can come compared to those from your peers.

Some might think with so many Giants in the field that it would be a detriment to attendance by the more altitudinaly challenged players. Then the open winner shot that idea all to hell.
