I always thought that the Crawford rule was designed with smoothing the match equity table in mind, even if it wasn't stated that way. It seems to do a rather good job in that respect, or a method like Neil's numbers wouldn't work. Sure it is not perfect, but I doubt very much that your proposed method would make the MET smoother (no data to back up my statement though).
