National Championships

In Response To: National Championships (Bob Glass)

In these types of situations I find it hard to give someone the title of a certain region or country. In games like backgammon and poker I am not sure if any event could have enough long term playability to it for someone to claim to be the world champion and such.

Even events like the world series of baseball, can the winner of that really be deemed the world champion? It is probably hard to justify that. In golf and tennis the winners of the slam event are labelled as such but no one is the French champion because of it. (There is obviously an international element to this of course that I'm not sure comes into play in these backgammon tournaments by the USBGF) Definitely the winner will be a great player and carry the label of winner of that event but I find it hard to ever call someone a world champion or champion of a certain region. Also in my mind being labelled as the winner should justify the same clout as saying world champion. ie I won the Monte Carlo world championship vs I am won in Monte Carlo and am the world champion.
