Your point may be valid as to the merit of one event creating a world or national champion. But until someone has the ambition and determination to create a more skill based system based on several matches and assuming the backgammon community at large has the willingness and patience to participate in such a long drawn out process, these single events are the only thing we've got at the moment. I think if NBC had a choice to interview the World Champion of Backgammon or some guy who has a PR under 2, I would suspect that they would rather interview the former. If you could come up with a way to make the two one and the same, all the more power to you.
