It's a matter of PR (and I don't mean player rating). Someone interested in learning about the backgammon community might go to Wikipedia to get a list of world champions. Merited or not, that's what the simple folk do. People tend to catalogue and compartmentalize things; it makes life easier. People who actually live and die backgammon may actually know better, but we're not talking about the elite. Titles are used as a reference point for the public at large. They are also flattering to those who receive them. That's why the Queen of England is far more well-known than the Prime Minister who actually runs the country. And the Queen brings in far more revenue to the country too.
