National Championships

If you're talking about me, the proper expression is Greek-Canadian.
I like titles, and if you win a tournament or championship that offers a title, be it city, state, country, world, people will refer to you as a Champion. Whether it is the hammer throw (something that involves skill and strength) or a bass-fishing contest (where luck can play a part) you are usually there to show your best and to win the title.
I'd like to quote Bill Robertie who said in May of 2004:
"The World Championship of Backgammon started in Las Vegas in 1968 (won by Tim Holland) and continued through 1974. There was one year the tournament wasn't held, which I think was 1969 or 1970. So from 1968-1971 there were three tournaments, all won by Tim Holland. (Pretty impressive run, since the fields were 64+, and all the biggies of the day participated.)"
In another part Robertie says:
"...the first "World Championship in Monte Carlo" took place in July 1979 (I was there) and actually set an attendance record which has never been equaled: about 350 players in the Main Event, and about 650 in all events combined."
I know some people have issues with the World Championships of Backgammon in Monte Carlo nowadays but it has history and glamour and most people respect the title.
I think that the forthcoming 1st International Backgammon Championship, even though not all countries will be represented, is very well-organized, and it will take more skill to win, and therefore the winner will be well-worthy of the title.
If you don't think a competition is worth having a title then don't call it Championship.
