Yes. The last one, for instance, saw a great first round struggle between the player many considered the world's best, Jerry Grandell, and the young player who many thought might really be the world's best, Johannes Levermann. At 1 a.m. they began their fifth (final) 11-point match. At 9-away, 9-away Jerry redoubled to 16, and to win Johannes needed Jerry to waste (Jerry had at least two checkers on every inner point) while he rolled two sets. The cube was precisely in the narrow window, so the double/take was correct. Johannes got his parlay, and went on to reach the finals, where he lost to Howard Ring.
Jerry, meanwhile, went on to reach the the semifinals of the US Open, where he stole a match from the defending champ (;-)), then in the finals steamrolled Neil to become the last US Open champ until Chiva revived the title.
Among the countries I remember being represented (each player had a flag of their country attached to their seat's nameplate) were: USA, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, Israel, Australia, Italy, Denmark, Japan, Hong Kong, UK ...
Those are ones I remember. It is probable that France, Austria, and Canada were also represented, and possibly others. Even after attending the Giant 32 Invitational and Chicago Open, I am not sure that it surpassed some of the World Cup/US Open fields. The World Championship and the Nordic were larger, several times larger, but the World Cup was in league of its own.
