If you look at dominance, some sports may not have a greatest player of all times (not that that is necessarily a reason not to look at dominance).
I think the respect of other players telling. MJ is the greatest basketball player. Based on stats you could possibly argue, but ask any basketball player, and they will mention MJ as the greatest ever.
In another sport, the young Soviet 'pioneers' being trained to become future world champions would start their games by saying "I am ..." followed by the name of their favored star / former world champion. One said "I am Mr. X". His trainer said, "No, you can be A, B, C whoever you like, but you cannot be X. He is too great." (X was a Dutchman BTW, it was not a political thing.)
When you have reached that kind of respect from your peers, you are the greatest of all time.
