I don't think I've ever faced this decision before but I would just make the 5pt here. The double hit risks quite a lot for comparatively little gain.

I don't know if there are any general guidelines for when to hit twice. If there's no play that builds a strong asset or assets, or if the tempo is valuable, then double hitting is often correct even if it leaves return shots. Weighing a positional asset against a double hit, however, is a difficult decision that I think varies from case to case a lot.
