The modern method

Below, B is the Bye player. The winning N (Non-bye player) is listed second. The losing N (Non-bye player) is listed third. The prize fund is $12,000. The number after the equals sign is the number of thousands (or 12ths) a player wins. In parentheses is each player's win-loss record.
Original
B = 6 (1-0) or 2 (0-1)
N = 5 (1-1) or 9 (2-0)
N = 1 (0-1) or 1 (0-1)New
B = 6 (1-0) or 2 (0-1)
N = 4 (1-1) or 8 (2-0)
N = 2 (0-1) or 2 (0-1)The two methods are identical except that in the new/smooth method the two N's (Non-bye players) have forcibly hedged 1/12 of the prize fund. for sure this should appeal to the weaker player. :)
If smoothness (reducing the amount riding on the final matches) is the primary objective, it is possible to "improve" it further (e.g., B = 5 or 3, N = 5 or 7, N = 3 or 3, guaranteeing all three players at least 1/4 of the prize fund).
Purely from an equity perspective, the original method is better for the stronger player. "Better" still (albeit extreme) would be: B = 8 or 0, N = 4 or 12, N = 0 or 0.
