The SIMPLE method

Yes, I grasped all that; it's inherent in my chart comparison. I'm not saying that any one of the methods I listed is intrinsically favorable over another (all are fair and equitable), nor am I discouraging anyone from adopting the new method; just that I personally prefer the original method.

Here is the SIMPLE method, in case nobody has yet suggested it:

The player who draws the bye automatically gets second place, and is awarded 1/3 of the prize money and 1/3 of the available ABT points. The other two play off for first and third place, with a combined pot of 2/3 of the prize money and 2/3 of the ABT points. (For example, 1st = 1/2 and 3rd = 1/6, but other divisions are of course possible. Also, the money and points don't have to follow the same percentages.)

The advantage is that one fewer round need be played. With the benefit of the extra time, the matches of all earlier rounds could be lengthened, or used in some other way.

It is true that the bye player cannot win first place, but IF that is perceived to be a disadvantage (which it isn't, in theory, except for the trophy) then either (a) the three players can put up with the bye being slightly unlucky or (b) put their fate in their own hands and hold a short auction for the antibyes, or (c) the bye player gets 35% because he can't win the trophy, lol.

Five players can be resolved by applying the same concept. One randomly drawn player (or randomly drawn among volunteers) automatically gets third place and is awarded 1/5 of the total prize money (and ABT points). The other four players play off for 1st, 2nd, and 4th/5th places. Again, the length of the tournament is trimmed by one round.
