The "auctioning off 2nd place" sounds easy and fair (from a money perspective).

Of course in sporting terms (if the name on the trophy matters most) it's a ridiculous idea, but by auctioning the players can weight in their personal preference between money and trophy as they like.

It could be done very simple indeed - each of the 3 players write their 2nd place price on a piece of paper and hand it over to the TD. Lowest number gets it.
