Yes, it is unethical if the players are "supposed" to consider only the additional value of what the tournament title/trophy might mean to them in the bid and not the ABT race. Granted, whether that should be an ethical obligation is a matter of opinion/consensus. But, like I said, your original objection seems valid even if ABT-tweaks are unethical because it is difficult to control/monitor, and there are sensible alternatives (i.e., (a) and (c)). That is, (b) would unnecessarily introduce a conflict of interests.
In golf, there are infractions that are considered unethical for a player not to call on him/herself even though nobody else might otherwise notice or even suspect. Does that make them bad rules? In the hopes that this doesn't create an off-topic spin (and given that we're already far astray in a detailed discussion of footnote option (b) in the original subthread post, which was to propose a simple method of handling three finalists), perhaps it would be best to say that it is a matter of opinion or perception.
