Chuck,
Some time back, I wrote a paper on "being in the zone"; it's a fascinating subject. Given the sparsity of BG literature, mathematical insight and other techno advancements; 20 yrs ago it would have been beneficial for one to eqip themselves psychologically in an attempt to enhance mental fitness. Does it still apply today? Given the level of "uncertainty" in today's climate compared to 20 yrs ago, some might argue, it does not! On the flipside, there is more to remember; to calculate; to evaluate, analyse and more at stake!
There have been a number of posts on the topic of Federer of late but I'm wondering how many of you observed a sudden change in his behaviour the moment Nadal broke hin for a 2nd time to go 6/5 up in the first set. Psychologically, he tipped his king; it was over!
In BG, is it a taboo subject? Is it somehow masked by the preoccupation of PR? Is it a hairy-fairy subject that has no place in the mind of a BG player? Would it show weakness to discuss it?
As one may utter "I'm all about the science". "Emotion is irrational, illogical and plays no part in my decision-making process".
Unfortunately for us humans, current research reveals "emotions are necessary in decision-making". The release of hormonal agents; or neurotransmitters adrenaline/noradrenaline are essential for memory, concentration and information processing. However, too little or too much of either can scupper performance.
Being in the Zone - Key words: Self-Efficacy, Situational-Awareness, Self-Actualisation
Resources - NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming), EI (Emotional Intelligence)
Phobia's - Fear of winning, Fearing of losing, fear of regret
Emotional Continuum - Turbulence----------------Equilibrium
This is by no means an exhaustive list but it does shed light on how one should go about "seeking the holy grail"; that is, being in the zone.
