Yeah do check first to make sure it's actually dead before you replace it! And even if you do take it in and they tell you it's croaked, I'd recommend keeping it anyway after you install a new one, to see what you can recover of your old stuff.
I lost a hard drive last year, and decided to replace the entire comp instead of just the disk, since I'd been wanting a quadcore screamer anyway and this was a convenient excuse to get one. Even though I back up my unique data frequently, I still had quite a lot of nonessential files and photos I didn't want to lose if I didn't have to, so I took the old disk home in a Baggie and then got it a Rocketfish so I could access what was left of it thru a USB port on the new comp. I was surprised at how much of the old material I was able to recover. You might want to try a Rocketfish even if your disk turns out to have fried, since it might not have cooked evenly, so to speak.
